So far, the year 2020 has been one roller coaster ride for the whole world; unpredictable and keeping us on toes in anticipation of what each day is going to bring for us. One of the most recent surprises has been rapper Kanye West a.ka. Yeezy tweeting that he would be running in the US elections 2020.
Kanye’s big announcement
On 4th of July, Rapper Kanye West made an announcement on Twitter that he’s running for the President of The United States of America this year. His tweet got retweeted more than 100,000 times within an hour and gathered a lot of attention. Kim Kardashian West also retweeted Kanye’s presidential bid, soon after.
Yeezy immediately received endorsement by Tesla chief, Elon Musk and the internet went wild with the hashtag #KanyeForPresident. The memes didn’t take long to roll in, after.
However, Musk’s support for Kanye’s presidential bid seems to have lasted for only about 72 hours as after Kanye’s recent interview with Forbes, Elon expressed their difference of opinions in a now-deleted tweet.
Is Yeezy really gonna run for president?
Kanye West, 43, first showed interest in the position in November 2019 at a business event. He claimed that he would create so many job opportunities that he wouldn’t have to run for president, he could simply walk.
Earlier this week, however, it was very unclear if West is really running for president or is it just publicity for his upcoming album “God’s Country”. Also, CAN he even run for President at this point, as he missed several key deadlines to make it on the presidential ballot in November last year, giving him a major disadvantage. Why? Because this might mean that he would lose a bunch of votes by default in several states. Moreover, as a “politics-rookie”, Kanye’s chances seem to be pretty slim, anyway.
Can Kanye Still Run for President?
The answer is yes. How?
If Kanye wants to run for President in November 2020, he will have to run as a “write-in” candidate. Also, his name would not appear in the ballot and he would have to fund his own campaign. Next, he will have to qualify for candidacy and file with the Electoral Commission. Above all, he would also need 38 signatures and permissions from Texas’ Electoral College presidential electors.
Until Ye’s Forbes interview, we all were wondering “where the f*ck is Kanye when you need him?”
Kanye’s Forbes interview
Shit got real after Kanye revealed about running his very serious campaign called “Birthday Party” in his interview with Forbes.
That sentence, on the other hand, does not sound serious at all, neither do Kanye’s remains of the Presidential hopes.
The Rapper told Forbes that the reason behind calling his campaign a “Birthday Party” is “When we win, it’s everybody’s birthday”. Kanye says his presidency is modeled around the secret-nation of Wakanda from the movie Black Panther.
“I’m gonna use the framework of Wakanda right now because it’s the best explanation of what our design group is going to feel like in the White House”-Kanye West
He also added that he has dropped his support for President Donald Trump. He has been one of the biggest celebrity supporters of President Trump, even wore the red hat in the past.
Ever since Kanye’s announcement he has received mixed responses, as Kanye’s opinions don’t land too far from President Trump. And in-turn get a similar kind of criticism.
On being asked about taxes, Kanye seemed to be under-prepared and said that he hadn’t researched on it, yet. Kanye has made an awful lot of controversial political statements over the years. Kanye has also revealed his bipolar condition rather lightly, in the past.
After only 11 days of announcing his presidential run, Kanye has dropped out of 2020 Presidential elections. A member of Kanye’s campaign team, Steve Kramer, confirmed his drop out. Kramer’s words were, “I have nothing good or bad to say about Kanye. Everyone has their personal decision about why they make decisions. Running for president has to be one of the hardest things for someone to actually contemplate at that level.” He further added, “any candidate running for president for the first time goes through these hiccups.”
Kanye’s sinuous approach to 2020 elections
On July 15th a public affairs officer for the Oklahoma Board of Elections talked to New York magazine. He revealed that West’s representative came to the Oklahoma Board of Elections with an executed statement of candidacy and filing fee. It was the last day in Oklahoma for independent presidential candidates to file to appear on the ballot.
However, with the deadlines for eight other states having been passed, Kanye’s presidential run has turned into a one-state affair. It has been stated that Yeezy has family ties in the state, which may seem like an advantage to him. But all in all, it looks like a mini-rehearsal for the next elections.
Kanye has expressed his desire of running for president on multiple occasions. It is safe to say, if not this year, he may run in 2024 as he had stated before.
In my personal opinion, Kanye West is a great rapper but he isn’t a politician. As much as his fans may support him, just like Kanye, they’ve probably never voted. Kanye’s views probably wouldn’t be acceptable to the people of America. It takes a much healthier mindset to lead a whole nation, especially one as great as The United States of America.
